iPod Touch: Configure Gmail IMAP Folders

Update: this is based on my jailbroken 1.1.2 iPod Touch. I'll be upgrading to 1.1.4 at some point shortly and will update the instructions accordingly.

Gmail offers IMAP, which in my opinion, is a far better way of accessing your email than the default POP3 setup that is automatically configured by the iPod Touch/iPhone's Mail application. In order to ensure that the way email is handled on your Touch matches the same behavior through the webmail interface, you need to make the following configuration changes.

Mail settings for iPod Touch

Under Settings, select "Mail", "Add Account", "Other", then "IMAP" and use the following settings:

Incoming Mail Server
Host Name: imap.gmail.com
User Name: your Gmail account
Password: your Gmail password

Outgoing Mail Server
Host Name: smtp.gmail.com
User Name: your Gmail account
Password: your Gmail password

Advanced
Use SSL: On (both incoming/outgoing)
Authentication: Password (both incoming/outgoing)
Server port: 993 (incoming) and 587 (outgoing)

Mapping iPod Touch folders to Gmail IMAP folders
Once you've set up your Gmail account, go back to Settings>Mail>Gmail (or whatever you've named your Gmail account settings) and change the folder mappings as follows:

a. Select "Advanced"
b. Select "Drafts Mailbox" and set it to "On the server > [Gmail] Drafts"
c. Select "Sent Mailbox" and set it to "On the server > [Gmail] Sent Mail"
d. Select "Deleted Mailbox" and set it to "On the server > [Gmail] Trash"

Click on "Advanced" each time to return to the prior menu after choosing a folder

Once this is complete, new sent mail will automatically be saved in your Gmail "Sent" folder, new draft mail will be saved to your Gmail "Drafts" folder, and deleted mail will appear in your Gmail "Trash" folder.

Any emails sent from your iPhone will appear in Gmail’s ‘Sent’ view, any saved drafts saved on your iPhone will appear in Gmail’s ‘Drafts’ view, and any deleted messages will be reflected in Gmail’s ‘Trash’ view. If you want to "Archive" email from your Touch, open the message and move it to the "[Gmail] All Mail" folder.

Happy Gmailing!

not working

hey, i just got a new iTouch. i tried the following steps above but it's not working. do i need to enter the IMAP Prefix Path?

No Advanced settings on my iPod touch

I tried to follow the instructions above, but I don't see any "Advanced" options when I try to set up the account. I haven't been able to connect to any IMAP server yet.

I just bought the 16G Touch, and it has the 1.1.3 firmware, so I assumed I had the most recent software. Is there some sort of update that I need?

Stopped working

A few days ago, this worked for my Gmail account. But today, it stopped sending emails. It receives it just fine, but does not work when I'm sending it out. I tried to sync it with Mail using iTunes, (and with Mail I never could send out mail with GMail. the smtp.gmail.com server always timed out) and it is timing out now with the ipod Touch.

Help!

Ipod Touch

Nice work done

Archive or Delete

I know, it's probably an old habit, but I actually delete stuff that I don't necessarily want clogging up my search results later. Thanks for the input though!

Archive mail instead

I prefer to Archive mail instead of Delete when I "trash" it. That's what Gmail's fast searching and big storage are all about. Gmail didn't even offer a Trash in the first few months of it's existence, and that was just to appease those who couldn't wrap their heads around archiving everything.

So I pointed "Deleted Mailbox" to "All Mail" instead. Works fine for me.
